Common questions
Do I need a partner?
You need a partner for partnered swing dances like Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag and Balboa. We try to balance the group so everyone dances roughly equally. If you register without a partner, you're automatically placed on a waiting list until we find you a partner or you find one among your friends, colleagues or acquaintances. If it turns out we can't take you without a partner but you still want to dance, consider dancing the other role or look into our Solo Jazz classes.
Which dance role should I choose?
Swing dances (Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, Balboa) are partner dances in which one person “leads” and the other “follows”. It makes no difference who picks which role – both men and women can lead and follow equally. When you start classes you choose one role that you'll mainly dance, though there will also be classes where we switch roles. If the urge to dance matters more to you than the role, register without a partner for the other or for both roles.
Can I join a group that's already running?
A beginners' group – within a month of its start. Higher-level groups – only after consulting us or taking a few private lessons.
What should I wear?
Clean shoes and comfortable clothes that don't restrict you are what matter – but 1) the dance floor isn't a gym (especially at parties), 2) some classes are more physically intense than others, and 3) “comfortable” should also be comfortable for the people around you and whom you'll dance with. It's a good idea to bring a spare shirt to change into after class, especially at parties.
